Frequently Asked Questions
Good question!
- STEP 1: Please make sure you ask us everything you need to know to be sure that this is something you require for your .eu domain.
- STEP 2: Once you have made the decision to proceed we ask you for certain information about you and your .eu domain, including:
- Your business details (or your personal details if an individual)
- The designated contact information for the domain
- Confirmation of the .eu domain name(s)
- Who will be signing the Legal Trust Deed on behalf of your business
- STEP 3: We send you a completed Contract and Legal Trust Deed to be signed electronically using DocuSign.
- STEP 4: Once signed by you and by our Registered Swedish Branch we send you instructions on how to change the .eu domain contact details to our Swedish address.
That is it! It is a fairly painless and quick process and should take no more than a couple of hours to complete. Please ask us if you have any questions or want to find out more.
No.
Using our service your .eu domain name can remain under your control with your current domain hosting service. You do not need to change any website hosting or email settings - all you need to do is change the registered contact details for the domain to the Euro Domain Secure offices in Sweden on signing of our Legal Trust Deed.
Yes.
You have complete control over where your domain is hosted and can change this at any time.
We have had the legal structure and Legal Trust Deed drafted and reviewed by a top City of London commercial law firm. Additionally we have liaised with EURid (the .eu domain registry) and the structure is cleared and permitted under the existing rules - Article 4 (2) (b) of Regulation (EC) No 733/2002, as amended by Regulation (EU) 2019/517 for persons’, undertakings’ and organisations’ eligibility for registration and holding of .eu domains.
Our service is £150 + VAT for initial set-up and £200 + VAT each year.
This means it costs £350 + VAT for the first year and £200 + VAT each year from then on.
Discounts are available if you have multiple .eu domains. Go to our Apply now... page to send us your details.
In short, you will lose your .eu domain name and it will become available for anyone else to register and use - potentially using your business name, brand and intellectual property against you. You will also lose any website traffic and email services associated with the domain.
EURid .eu domain timetable
As from 1 January 2021, 00:00:00 CET, EURid will NOT allow the registration of any new domain name by UK registrants.
From that date, EURid will allow neither the transfer, nor the transfer through update, of any domain name to a UK registrant.
On 21 December 2020, EURid will notify by email all UK registrants who did not demonstrate continued compliance with the eligibility criteria and their registrars about the risk of forthcoming non-compliance with the .eu regulatory framework.
On 1 January 2021, as of 00:00:00 CET, EURid will notify by email all UK registrants and their registrars that their domain name is no longer compliant with the .eu regulatory framework and therefore, it is moved to the so-called “SUSPENDED” status until 31 March 2021. A domain name in the “SUSPENDED” status can no longer support any service (such as website and email), but may still be reinstated if registration data is updated to meet the eligibility criteria.
On 1 April 2021, 00:00:00 CET, EURid will once again notify by email all UK registrants and their registrars that their domain name is no longer compliant with the .eu regulatory framework and consequently is moved to the so-called “WITHDRAWN” status. A domain name in the “WITHDRAWN” status is not in the zone file and cannot support any service.
On 1 January 2022, as of 00:00:00 CET, all the domain names in the “WITHDRAWN” status, formerly assigned to UK registrants, will be REVOKED and subsequently, become AVAILABLE for general registration. Their release will occur in batches for security reasons.
In short - you don't!
You will meet EURid's requirements if you have a branch office or subsidiary based geographically within the EU. Our service is a quick and easy way to achieve that without having to go through the expense and administrative burden of setting it up yourself.
We are aware that some domain registrar services have set-up a .eu domain transfer and lease-back service so that you can continue to use your .eu domains.
Though this approach does meet the legal requirements of Article 4 (2) (b) of Regulation (EC) No 733/2002, as amended by Regulation (EU) 2019/517, we did not like the approach of having to transfer legal title and ownership of your .eu domain to a third party (i.e. your domain registrar or a partner organisation).
Our approach is much more straight-forward in that we act only on your authority - granted through our bespoke and unique Legal Trust Deed - to be appointed the registered contact for the domain. You retain ownership and control of your .eu domain throughout.
All this information will be sent to you once you have received and electronically signed the Contract and Legal Trust Deed.
We have prepared step-by-step guides for a number of UK-based Domain Registrars (such as 123-Reg, IONOS / 1&1, Heart Internet) with information on how to change these details and meet the legal requirement for .eu domains.
Though it fairly unlikely (the wheels of European legislation turn fairly slowly!) we have considered the possibility and built-in safeguards to our service.
Because ownership of the domain is not transferred to Euro Domain Secure we can make change to the registered keeper at any time with your consent, meaning that we can adapt quickly and easily to future changes in legal requirements for .eu domains.
Yes please! We love the opportunity to explain our service in more detail. Please feel free to give our director, Neil Pfister, a call on +44 (0)7900 376685
